200 x 4 = 800
200 exhibitors, each offering an average of 4 wine samples, resulted in a total of 800 red wines available for tasting at the Falstaff Red Wine Gala.
On November 25, 2019, 200 Austrian winemakers showcased their red wines in the Hofburg, eagerly awaiting the announcement of the Falstaff winners of 2019.
Tasting fewer than 100 white wines is already a challenge—with red wines, the number of wines one can reasonably evaluate drops even further. Visitors become overwhelmed and switch to "survival mode"—they taste wines from familiar winemakers and perhaps one or two additional recommendations.
Now, let’s try a thought experiment:
Imagine if all red wines were analyzed for their health-promoting compounds. Out of the 800 tested wines, perhaps only 30 to 50 would stand out as rich in polyphenols and flavonoids—compounds that reduce the risk of heart attack, lower blood pressure, combat free radicals, and slow the aging of cells.
That would give us, the consumers, an additional selection criterion beyond just aroma and taste.
Now that would be something, wouldn’t it?
