Alcohol in Education

Who teaches young people how to handle alcohol responsibly? This topic reminds me of the long-debated sex education discussions. What a delicate balancing act it was! It took time before doctors, parents, religious leaders, and educators could agree on a curriculum that covered reproduction, pleasure, responsibility, protection against infections, and preventing unwanted pregnancies.
And now, let’s talk about alcohol.
Why are young people left to figure it out on their own? Left to compete in binge-drinking challenges, treating alcohol consumption as a dare—until it becomes a habit, and eventually, an addiction.
Why don’t we educate students about alcohol in school?
•    Explain the differences between beer, wine, liqueur, spirits, and mixed alcoholic drinks.
•    Discuss moderate wine consumption and its effects on health.
•    Provide a self-assessment questionnaire: "Am I at risk of addiction?"
A blanket condemnation of alcohol without explanation breeds mistrust, curiosity, defiance… and ultimately, more alcohol addiction.
