Wine and Corona – What Else?
Consumer behavior remained largely unchanged during the crisis—except for toilet paper, of course.
The lack of direct winery sales was partially offset by increased online sales. However, large-scale wine producers dominated supermarket shelves, leaving smaller wineries struggling.
But the biggest gap came from the halt in tourism and the shutdown of restaurants and hospitality—a loss that could not be compensated.
So, like many others, winemakers are waiting for the long-anticipated revival of tourism.
Even if Austrians spend more vacations at home, they won’t be able to fill the "wine gap" (or the beer gap) left by lost international visitors.
Corona problems until the very end.
Winemakers wish for the old normal to return—because the new one is something we all dread.
Oh, wait—no fear-mongering!
So, chin up and push through.
Cheers, good health, and whatever else keeps us motivated!
