What Opponents of Alcohol Fail to Mention
The GBD Study — Global Burden of Disease Study 2020 — assessed alcohol and health for the first time by taking into account sex, age and regional origin.
The findings were reported in The Lancet — an internationally recognized medical and scientific journal of the highest standard — 2022; 400: 185–235.
For Central Europe, the result is as follows: until the age of 30, both men and women should almost completely abstain from alcohol. This means less than one drink per day.
From the age of 30 onward, the J-curve applies. Moderate alcohol consumption of between one and three drinks per day may have potential positive effects on health.
Due to its polyphenols and flavonoids, wine occupies a special position. It differs significantly from beer, spirits and other alcoholic beverages.
These findings have so far remained unmentioned in broad media coverage, even though they were identified by the same experts and authors of the first study, which stated that there is no health-promoting amount of alcohol.
