WINE AND HEALTH

W&G – Wine & Health is a platform for people who want to live healthily and enjoy drinking wine. W&G aims to research and communicate the effects of moderate wine consumption on health. First, the wines are analyzed to determine their content of health-promoting compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids. These substances sustainably lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart attack by up to 50 percent, and have a positive impact on the aging process (resveratrol) and type 2 diabetes. W&G awards wines based on the amount of these beneficial compounds they contain and rates them according to a point system. W&G recommends MODERATE wine consumption, as larger amounts of alcohol can be harmful to health.

THE ANALYSIS

At HBLAuBA Klosterneuburg, the oldest viticulture school, wine analyses are conducted by a testing laboratory accredited according to ISO standard 17025. More than 500 different compounds are categorized and evaluated as polyphenols and flavonoids based on the W&G concept.

Viticulture

The vine develops its own immune system by storing polyphenols and flavonoids in the grape skins. These compounds protect the berries from UV radiation, pests, and fungal infestations. The less the vines are supported by pesticides during the growing season, the more they need to strengthen their immune system naturally, leading to increased production of polyphenols.

In red wine production, polyphenols and flavonoids are extracted from the grape skins during maceration and incorporated into the wine. The duration of maceration and fermentation temperature play a crucial role in this process.
